Manufacturing Center

BD GeneOhm’s primary project objective was to construct a new manufacturing complex that would permit an increase in the production and distribution of their proprietary diagnostic kits to meet the growing market demand. This new building includes administrative offices and areas for manufacturing, quality control, packaging/labeling, and shipping/receiving of leading-edge diagnostic kits for the healthcare industry. Over 30,000 square feet of the building are dedicated to producing kits that use human DNA to quickly identify the presence of infections such as Group B streptococcus and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.

The design concept provides separate building sectors for the manufacturing and testing positive and negative control materials used in the diagnostic process. To prevent cross-contamination, the two sectors are hermetically sealed from each other, with separate, duplicated areas for employee access, administrative offices, manufacturing suites, and mechanical and storage areas. Building functions are organized into three distinct volumes - one dedicated to administrative offices and support areas, one to production activities (manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and quality control), and one to technical support areas (storage, shipping, receiving maintenance, and technical services). This configuration allows for future growth of the various areas with a minimum impact on the remainder of the building.

The architectural concept was developed based on a hypothetical site to meet the aggressive design and construction schedule. Final site selection necessitated rapid modification of site planning, structural design, and building envelope design.
