The first skyscraper building in Montreal, known as the New York Life Building (1887–89), and stands out with its distinctive cladding of Scottish red sandstone and red granite from the Thousand Islands. A successful collaboration with the owner (recipient of the CIGM Commercial Heritage Building Award in 2005) led to restoring the first two floors occupied by NFOE. The interior, once deteriorated, was meticulously brought back to its original state, showcasing Corinthian columns, ornate ceiling moldings, and woodwork, creating an inspiring work atmosphere.
The project's aesthetic blends past and present through vertical and horizontal elements. Both levels were cleared of previous partitions. Uncomplicated furnishings serve as a backdrop for intricate architecture. Open-plan workstations encourage teamwork and individual reflection. Spots for spontaneous meetings are thoughtfully placed. The design highlights original ornamentation. The ground-floor bank vault now serves as a library.
The interventions boast pure, minimalist lines glass, drywall, and metal interplay. The ground-floor waiting area introduces touches of color: a green monolith and a floating metal strip contrasting with classical columns.
The original woodwork and fireplace have been preserved in the conference room, The contemporary style light fixtures evoke cascading drops of water. The mix of original and modern decorations adds character to the space, which opens onto the Place d'Armes.
