Pathology Laboratory

Pathology Laboratory
This project required preliminary work with the institution to update the Functional and Technical Program (FTP), and design workshops were conducted with the participation of key stakeholders from the CIUSSS and the CHUS. The project, carried out in an aging building with limited ceiling height, presented numerous challenges related to the design of mechanical systems that are relatively large for a pathology laboratory. The existing facilities were not originally designed for laboratory use nor to accommodate the substantial amount of mechanical equipment within ceiling spaces.
As is the case with all hospital projects, the laboratory renovation was undertaken in an occupied building. In addition, possible construction work was restricted to the floors above and below the laboratory for the routing of mechanical and plumbing systems. An additional constraint affected the project, which extended over several years due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. This resulted in longer planning phases and the inclusion of a 10% contingency in the project budget, which explains the cost overrun.
Mechanical systems had to be revised, structural reinforcements were required, and decontamination of asbestos‑containing materials was carried out throughout the entire wing of the building. Certain code compliance upgrades were also necessary.
Expertise: NC2 biosafety laboratory, hazardous materials storage, upgrading mechanical systems to current standards, work within an operational building, and work in asbestos‑contaminated conditions.
